Tamil Typing Introduction
Tamil is one of the most spoken languages in India and Sri Lanka. It is also spoken in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, and parts of Indonesia. Tamil is estimated to have around 20 million speakers. Tamil is a Dravidian language and belongs to the South-Central group of the Indo-Aryan languages.
Tamil Language History
The Tamil language is spoken by around 20 million people in India and Sri Lanka. It is one of the six classical languages of India, and is written with the Tamil script. The Tamil language dates back to at least the 3rd century BC, and there are references to it in ancient Hindu scriptures. The Tamil language was heavily influenced by Sanskrit, and together they form the Dravidian language family. In the 8th century AD, the Tamil-speaking region came under Muslim rule, and the Tamil language began to be used as a vehicle for Islamic conversion. The Muslims brought with them Persian and Arabic words, and over time these became part of the Tamil lexicon. In 16th century AD, Portuguese traders arrived in Sri Lanka, and they began to spread Christianity throughout the island. This led to a decline in the use of Tamil, as Christians preferred to use Portuguese instead. However, during British rule in Sri Lanka (1815-1948), English became the main language of administration, education and commerce. This helped to preserve and promote the use of English throughout Sri Lanka, even though Tamils continued to speak their native language.
Tamil Alphabets
The Tamil alphabet is made up of 26 letters. Each letter corresponds to a consonant and a vowel. The letters are arranged in five blocks, called metros. There are no vowels in the first block (mA).
